A UK-wide hospital pilot has paved the way for full NHS access to Abbott and Insulet’s latest diabetes management system for anyone who qualifies for a hybrid closed loop system.
Following a successful pilot in six hospitals in the UK, Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus glucose sensor has been announced as being able to integrate with Insulet’s tubeless Omnipod 5 Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) System, without the need for additional devices, connections or tubes, offering personalised automated insulin delivery and care for people living with diabetes. Omnipod 5 is the first and only tubeless automated insulin delivery (AID) system to integrate with the FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor.
The system was launched in the UK and Netherlands in April and is now widely available to anyone who qualifies for a hybrid closed loop system on the NHS.
Neil Harris, general manager for Abbott’s diabetes care business in the UK and Ireland, said: “We know that bringing two of the most widely used diabetes management systems together will make life a little easier for thousands of people across Britain.”
All Omnipod 5 controllers to connect with both sensors – in the UK Insulet is making all Omnipod 5 Controllers compatible to connect with both sensors.
Existing users with controllers will receive an Over The Air (OTA) update to their controllers in the coming weeks.
