Being a lab rat or a guinea pig does not sound all that attractive, at least to most of us. However, at the same time we can’t deny that to a great extent we rely on the trials, research and experiments that lead to the discovery of insulin, the development of blood test meters, CGM sensors, insulin pumps and ultimately closed-loop insulin delivery systems.
Therefore, in our lead feature in this issue we take a look at what’s involved in setting up trials. This is part one, we’ll be revisiting in the next issue with more information and how to take part in research if you take a fancy to it.
As ever, there’s a few pages of news. Highlights include a coming webinar about travelling with Type 1 diabetes, and that one of the charities won gold for its rather fabulous video about ‘what a cure feels like’. Plus, it’s official: there’s now a Type 5 diabetes.
There’s also a few pages giving travel advice as we move towards the holiday season. In our food section, there’s plenty of info with news on what us Brits tend to add to a classic Italian Spaghetti Bolognese dish. It’s quite entertaining though if you are Italian, avoid it as it will make your toes curl, and move on to another option (which could still offend some, as it’s vegan) and read about chef Antonio Alderuccio’s meat-free version.
In Making Carbs Count we revisit (and give another big plug) to the best, boldest and most colourful beans, with a simple but sophisticated modern, spring-like recipe for salmon with lemon, leeks and beans. I hope you enjoy this issue.
